Could the SURF save Moto?

After the runaway success of the RAZR a few years back, Motorola have gone on a downward spiral. The company, instead of releasing other innovative products, got caught up with all the RAZR’s success that it tried repeatedly to ride it all the way. Unfortunately for them, the latter versions of the RAZR failed to capture even just a small portion of the original’s success.

Now, Motorola find themselves in a bind, with market share dropping, and its global ranking going from second down to fourth in a span of two years.

There is hope though, that is if Motorola are able to release something good that everybody would want. Could that device be the SURF A3100? Probably not, but Moto’s new Windows Mobile phone could be a good stop-gap measure before the company does a Palm and release something like the Pre.

The SURF A3100, as stated earlier, runs Windows Mobile 6.1 with a customized skin ala TouchFlo running on top to make the OS more finger-friendly. The phone features a 2.8 inch touchscreen that has a QVGA (320×240) resolution, a track ball for easy navigation, quad-band GSM and triband UMTS for global connectivity, as well as Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11 b/g).

The SURF probably won’t be to Motorola what the Pre is to Palm, but it is a competent enough smartphone that is a viable alternative to some of the other offerings out in the market right now.
